concrete, wire mesh, threaded steel studs / 18"x20"x24"(shell only)
Concrete Chair is a Collaboration with Yu-chih Hsiao
A concrete chair, the form modeled in Rhino based on a hybrid of four chair shells we had been using around our studio. Then we prototyped the form in wood to test for comfort, and adjusted the digital file accordingly. A mold was cut by laser from many layers of plywood and sanded completely smooth. The form was covered in duct tape as a mold release, which also provided a beautiful surface texture and finish. The form incorporated threaded female studs that were cast into the concrete chair shells. Neoprene rubber vibration absorption mounts were threaded into there studs to provide shock protection between the concrete shell and the steel rod base. The base was a bent rod sled-type with six connection points to the shell. We cast a total of three shells during the semester and made one base, mostly spending our efforts of achieving the optimal mix design and pouring method. Concrete is an amazing a tricky set of materials and methods and Yuji and I learned a great deal during this project. We also tested the shells for use in public outdoor locations, and as stackable masonry units.
